New Polling Shows Kelly Ernby’s Background, Ballot Title Is Significantly Persuasive With Republicans and Independents

Results indicate that Kelly Ernby shows greater promise to defeat incumbent Asm. Cottie Petrie-Norris than Diane Dixon

(Orange County, CA) - A recent poll conducted by Remington Research Group found that Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby’s ballot title is significantly persuasive with Republicans and Independents, putting Ernby’s campaign in a strong position ahead of the March primary. The poll surveyed 531 likely 2020 General Election voters in the 74th Assembly District and has a margin of error of +/- 4.25%.

The poll also shows a lapse of support for incumbent Democrat Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris. Petrie Norris’ image is a net -3 points, with only 34% of 74th District respondents expressing a favorable opinion of the freshman legislator.

Additionally, only 29% of respondents believe Cottie Petrie-Norris deserves to be re-elected in 2020. Non-partisan voters favor electing someone new over re-electing Petrie-Norris by a margin of 13 points.

Among Republican candidates for the 74th Assembly District, a recently released internal poll by Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon’s campaign shows that Dixon’s initial name identification in the district is higher than Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby’s.

While Dixon’s initial name identification might be higher than Ernby’s, Dixon’s favorability in her hometown of Newport Beach shows vulnerability. Despite serving on the Newport Beach City Council for over four years, Diane Dixon’s favorability in Newport Beach hovers at only 33%, with 67% of Newport Beach respondents expressing an unfavorable opinion or no opinion of the mayor.

Dixon’s name ID advantage greatly diminishes when respondents learn the ballot titles of the two Republican candidates. When respondents were asked to choose between the three declared candidates for the 74th Assembly District, Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby edged out Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon among Republicans and Independents.

Initial head-to-head matchups show Deputy District Attorney Kelly Ernby with a 4% lead over Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, while a Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon/Petrie-Norris matchup yields 43% for both candidates. The results also show that Kelly Ernby picks up 6% more Republican support than Diane Dixon in a head-to-head match with Petrie-Norris.

The results of the survey indicate that Ernby shows greater promise to defeat Petrie-Norris than Dixon in the general election.
